Does that thing have a Kinky?
TFG has a photo of the new Texas Monthly with Kinky on the cover dressed in drag as Queen Elizabeth. Also a discussion about the deterioration of Texas Monthly; I agree completely --a good example is the Bum Steer Awards -- THEN: funnier than Scrappleface NOW: lamer than lame.
Lots of Kinky stories come to mind but one of the best was about 10 or 12 years ago during a show with Turk Pipkin called "2 Gentlemen of Bologna." We were in the since-departed Live Oak Theatre - 150 seats, semi-in-the-round, with some of the usual locals in attendance (Ann Richards accompanied by Bud Shrake in the front row).
Kinky came out first and kind of MC'd a little and as I recall was a little agitated and disoriented. This was not uncommon for him in those days. Turk then performed what passes for talent in Austin: his world famous ping pong ball juggling (blows 'em out of his mouth about 10' in the air and catches 'em when they fall while keeping at least 3 balls going at once - caught 'em in his mouth, no hands were used). Kinky followed with a couple of songs and a stream of consciousness monologue that was interrupted when a young (10 years old) girl, seated in the front row about 10 feet to Kinky's side, got up to go to the restroom just as he was warming up. He stopped in mid-gesture, smiled at her parents, looked at the girl and announced how proud he was to be in Austin where they appreciate a family-oriented show; adding...

The audience exploded in laughter (including the former Gov) and the rest of the show was uneventful, save for a performance by Goat Carson, whose act defied description and succeeded in clearing out the rest of the easily offended.
Maybe TM will tell about our conversation with the locals about Kinky running for JP in Kerrville. This was also about 10 years ago at a tribute to Ace Reid at the Hilton in Kerrville. And then there's that wedding we went to across the creek, and the blonde...

As I recall, the Kerrville locals (mostly senior citizens if that isn't redundant) at the Ace Reid soiree had lots of surprisingly positive comments about KF -- maybe from knowing his parents and them at Echo Hill Ranch. Even to the point of regretting he wasn't elected. Do we still have some of those campaign matches?
